COBANA promotes the sustainable agricultural practices on banana plantations in a development partnership with GIZ
Already today Platanera Río Sixaola in Costa Rica sets standards for the sustainable cultivation of bananas, e.g. through a ground covering vegetation.
Hamburg, 26.1.2017 -
“Strengthening of sustainable agricultural farming methods on banana plantations in Costa Rica and Ecuador” – this is the title of the project which the fruit trading company COBANA has initiated in a cooperation with the German Association for International Cooperation GmbH (GIZ). This cooperation is promoted by the federal ministry of economic cooperation and development (BMZ) within the framework of the develoPPP.de-program.
The project is based on many years of experience with innovative agricultural practices of Platanera Río Sixaola who has been cooperating with COBANA for many years.
In cooperation with GIZ, COBANA aims at supporting further pioneering banana farms in Costa Rica and Ecuador. Especially measures for maintaining soil health and biodiversity are the focus of this project, which clearly exceed the requirements of common certification standards. The overall objective of the project is to extend and to multiply these sustainable methods of farming.
In doing so, COBANA wants to use its long-standing direct influence in the production for strengthening the social and environmentally friendly banana farming as well as strongly networking the cooperation of the farmers. Another aspiration for COBANA is the procurement of a larger and more stable quantity of sustainable bananas for the customers.
COBANA’s key suppliers have already based their operations on BSCI’s social development principle
